WHAT TO EXPECT AT A MATCH:
A match will consist of 4 or more stages over a few hours with shooters helping to reset stages and assist with teardown at the end of the match.
Shooters are assigned to squads of up to 10 people and are assigned a stage to start at. The squad is given a stage brief consisting of starting position, number of targets and types, total projectiles required and possible points. The competitors are then given a time limit of a few minutes to do a stage walk. The stage walk is the only opportunity a competitor can walk through and plan their run.
The range officers will call up the first shooter and give them a few commands like "load and make ready", "are you ready" and "stand by" at that point a buzzer will sound, the competitor can draw their pistol and engage the targets.
A stage ends when the competitor shoots the stop plate. This is a device with an LED light that changes color when hit and helps the RO record the final shot of the stage.
The competitors gun is unloaded, must show clear and is holstered. The stage is then scored for accuracy. Paper targets require 2 hits to score, 5 points, 3 points and 1 point depending on how close to the center (all marked with perforations). This score is entered in a tablet, divided by the time and the competitor is given a "Hit Factor". The higher the hit factor the better the competitor did.
Penalties are assessed on if a competitor stepped out of the shooting area, hit a no shoot, missed a target or violated many other possible rules! These penalties usually result in a deduction of their points.
The next competitor is asked to step up after everyone resets the stage after patching targets and resetting steel.
After all stages are shot, scores are combined and (usually) awards are given based on performance in each of the divisions.
